I write to express my profound recognition and gratitude for your decisive action on January 3, 2026. The bold operation that led to the apprehension of Nicolás Maduro represented a firm stand against narco-terrorism and a long-overdue step toward restoring security and stability in our hemisphere.
Your leadership demonstrated unwavering commitment to justice and to protecting the interests of the United States and the Venezuelan people. Thank you for acting decisively where others hesitated.
At the same time, I must respectfully note my deep confusion and concern regarding the recognition of Venezuela’s sovereign will.
In the 2024 presidential election, the overwhelming evidence—including detailed vote tallies from a vast majority of polling stations—showed that Edmundo González Urrutia, supported by María Corina Machado, won by a landslide, with the Venezuelan people expressing their clear and resounding choice for democratic change.
If the United States and the international community rightly acknowledged this sovereign decision of the Venezuelan people at the time, why has full and unequivocal recognition of their elected leadership not translated into faster, more decisive support for a genuine democratic transition? The Venezuelan people voted massively and peacefully for change. Their voice must be honored without ambiguity.
Your recent actions have opened a critical window of opportunity. I urge you to continue leading with the same strength and clarity, ensuring that the legitimate will of the Venezuelan people—expressed so powerfully in 2024—guides the path forward to free, fair, and transparent elections, the return of exiles, and the full restoration of democracy.
